Ilvermorny, the American Hogwarts

Like France, Scandinavia and the United Kingdom, the United States is home to a magic school, Ilvermorny.

This school is mentioned for the first time in the film Fantastic Animals.  As the cast of the second installment presents one of Ilvermorny's teachers, Professor Eulalie Hicks, it's time to learn more about this school!

From Harry Potter wiki

According to JK Rowling, theéschool of witchcraft is founded in the 17th century by a distant Irish descendant by Salazar Serpentard named Isolt Sayre, a witch who did not have a very happy childhood because of her aunt obsessed with the Pur Blood status of Serpentardlikes like Marvolo and Morfin Gaunt in their time. Once in the United States, Isolt marries a Muggle and adopts children to whom she teaches magic. The school is located in Massachusetts and counts as Hogwarts 4 Houses: the Horned Snake, the Womatou Panther, the Thunderbird and the Puckwoodgenie. The names refer to magical creatures associated with her husband and children.

Tina Goldstein belonged to the House of the Thunderbird and her sister Queenie to that of the Puckwoodgenie during their student years. The Thunderbird represents the soul of the sorcerer (and this is the home of J.K Rowling!), the Horned Snake (House of Seraphina Picquery, President of MACUSA who helps Norbert and the Goldstein sisters) his spirit, Puckwoodgenie the role of the sorcerer who must protect the weakest than him and the Womatou embodies the body of the sorcerer in the physical sense and approaches the Gryffondor House whose values are courage and composure. You can find your house by taking a little test here. The animals representing the Houses are linked to Native American myths but also perhaps many pre-Columbian civilizations, the Aztecs honored for example Quetzalcoatl, the feathered snake.

Under the law of American sorcerers, children cannot possess a wand before they enter school. The distribution ceremony is not based on a Choice but on the statues of the 4 animals linked to the Houses: if a student is deemed worthy to enter by one or more statues, he is served. After the distribution the students are allowed to choose/be chosen by a magic wand.

Regardless of their house, all students wear a blue and red uniform, the favourite colours of Isolt and her husband James, adorned with a single-memory Gordian knot brooch that Isolt had received from his mother, who died with her father in an arson attack. The first name Isolt is reminiscent of Scandinavian legends (Tristan and Yseult for example) and the Gordian knot brooch of the founder of Ilvermorny is also a Celtic object (link to Isolt's native Ireland) worn by the Gauls and known as fibula (sort of clothing pin). Ilvermorny is therefore a true international school with a strong presence of several mythologies!  Ilvermorny's name is the same as that of Ysolt's childhood home, but some fans have other analyses :)

If Hogwarts his anthem, Ilvermorny has one too! Co-written by Alison Sudol, who plays Queenie Goldstein and J.K. Rowling, he debuted "We stand as one united / Against the Puritan/ We draw our inspiration / From good witch Morrigan".
